The Numbakulla descended from the sky and found Ankotarinja as an inapatua — a semi-formed mass without properly separated limbs. Using stone knives, they carved his features, separated his arms and legs, and transformed him into a fully formed human ancestor.
Ankotarinja is associated with specific tjurunga — sacred inscribed stones or boards that embody his ancestral essence. Through proper ceremonial treatment of these objects, contemporary Arrernte people maintain their connection to this primordial ancestor.
