Description

The sky camp behind the Milky Way where Baiame the Creator resides. In Kamilaroi and Euahlayi tradition, the spirits of the righteous dead reach Bullima by passing through the Coal Sack, a dark opening in a celestial tree near the Southern Cross, to join Baiame in a place where waters never dry and darkness never falls.

Mythology & Lore

Behind the Milky Way

Bullima lies behind the Milky Way, the sky camp of Baiame, the supreme creator god of the Kamilaroi and Euahlayi peoples of southeastern Australia. Baiame walked the earth during the Dreamtime, shaping the land and establishing the laws that govern human society. When his creative work was complete, he ascended beyond the visible sky to Bullima, leaving behind the sacred sites and Dreaming tracks that mark his earthly journey. From a crystal seat he watches over the world below, observing human conduct and receiving the souls of the righteous dead.

Bullima is a place of abundance. Its waters never dry up, its food is inexhaustible, and darkness never falls.

The Pathway of the Dead

The way to Bullima is written in the stars. The Southern Cross holds a central place in Kamilaroi and Euahlayi ceremony, linked to the story of when the first man died. Beside it lies the Coal Sack, the dark nebula visible as a gap in the Milky Way, which the tradition identifies as a hole in a dead tree: a Yaraan or Gulabah depending on the language group. This opening in the celestial tree is the passage through which the spirits of the dead travel to reach Bullima on the other side.

Not all spirits make the journey. Baiame judges the dead, and those who lived according to the sacred laws he established during the Dreamtime are received into his sky camp. Those who committed unforgivable transgressions, murder above all, are denied entry.
