Mythology & Lore

The Swallowing at Narran Lake

Kurrea lurked in the deepest parts of Narran Lake in Kamilaroi country, where light could not reach. It was immense, crocodile-like, and it swallowed its prey whole.

In the tradition recorded by Parker, the creator god Baiame was away hunting when his two wives, Birrahgnooloo and Cunnunbeillee, went to Narran Lake to fish. As they waded into the water, Kurrea rose from the depths and swallowed both women, dragging them down into its underwater lair.

Baiame returned and found his wives gone. He tracked them to the lake. Using his power, he slew Kurrea and split its body open, freeing his wives from the monster's belly. The waters of Narran Lake closed over the creature's remains.
