Description

Two ancestral kangaroo beings of the Nambutji people, Minawara and his companion Multultu traveled the Dreamtime landscape in kangaroo form. Where they camped, sacred grounds came into being. Where they performed ceremonies, ritual sites were created. Their dreaming tracks still map the territory of the Kangaroo clan.

Mythology & Lore

The Kangaroo Ancestors

Minawara and his companion Multultu are ancestral kangaroo beings of the Nambutji people. During the Dreamtime, the pair traveled across the landscape in kangaroo form, their passage creating terrain features and establishing sacred sites. Spencer and Gillen documented the tradition during their fieldwork among Central Australian peoples: each site along the track preserves a specific episode from the ancestors' journey, a place where they rested, hunted, fought, or performed a creative act.

The Kangaroo Clan

Members of the Kangaroo clan are spiritual descendants of Minawara and Multultu. They maintain the sacred sites along the dreaming track and perform the increase ceremonies the ancestors established during the Dreamtime, ceremonies to ensure healthy kangaroo numbers and to sustain the proper relationship between humans and the animal. Knowledge of the sites and their proper treatment passes from elders to initiates within the clan.
