Mythology & Lore

The Place of Baiame's Departure

Mount Yengo is a flat-topped sandstone mountain in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, sacred to the Darkinjung people as the place from which the creator Baiame ascended to the sky world after completing his work on earth. The mountain's distinctive flat summit bears the impression of Baiame's body, the mark left when the creator stepped off from this point into the sky. The summit plateau is windswept and open, flat stone meeting open air.

When the Darkinjung look toward Mount Yengo, they see the footprint of the All-Father's leaving: the moment when creation was complete and its maker withdrew to watch from above. Access to the summit is restricted in recognition of the mountain's sacred status.
