Mudungkala created the Tiwi Islands by rising from the ground and crawling across the sea, separating them from the Australian mainland. She carried three infant children — the first Tiwi people — establishing both the land and the population of the islands.
Banaitja arrived on the Tiwi Islands after Mudungkala had crawled them into existence, continuing her creative work by furnishing the bare land with forests, springs, animals, and sacred law during the Palaneri.
