Description

A water creature lurking in the Murray River's deep pools and bends, draped in river weeds and waiting among the murky depths. The Ngarrindjeri fear the Muldjewangk for its power to seize swimmers, overturn canoes, and drag the unwary beneath the surface.

Mythology & Lore

The Creature in the Deep

The Muldjewangk lives in the deep waters of the lower Murray, the slow wide stretches where the river runs dark beneath river red gums. It is large, powerful, and covered in river weeds that let it blend with the underwater vegetation until it strikes. It seizes swimmers and overturns canoes. It is most active at night, and during floods when the river runs swollen and opaque.

Ngarrindjeri children are warned not to swim in certain stretches or at certain times. Adults who disrespect the river, by polluting it or entering sacred stretches without authority, risk the creature's attention. Somewhere in the pools and bends of the Murray, the Muldjewangk waits.
