The Spirit Children
Nogomain lives in the sky and holds the unborn. In the traditions Elkin documented among certain northern Australian groups, spirit children exist in the celestial realm before they exist on Earth. Nogomain sends them down.
A father knows a child is coming because he dreams it. In the dream, Nogomain gives him the child's soul. The dream is not a symbol. It is the moment of origin, the point at which a life passes from the sky to the world below. When the child is born, the family knows where it came from and who sent it.
