Mythology & Lore
The Serpent in the Water, the Body in the Sky
Ungud dwells in the deep, permanent waterholes of the Kimberley in northwestern Australia, a being whose gender shifts between male, female, and categories beyond either. Working alongside the Wanjina cloud spirits, Ungud controls the waters of the earth while the Wanjina govern the waters of the sky.
Ungud is the source of human life. Spirit children dwell with the serpent in the waterholes, waiting to be sent into the world. A man may dream of receiving a spirit child from Ungud's waters. A woman may encounter one near a waterhole. Every birth in the Kimberley carries the Rainbow Serpent's mark.
When a rainbow appears in the sky, Ungud is visible: the serpent's body arching from the waters below to the clouds above. The rainbow is not a symbol but the being itself, momentarily revealed.
The Crystals of the Healers
Traditional healers in the Kimberley draw their power from Ungud. The Rainbow Serpent grants them quartz crystals, solidified essence of its rainbow, fragments of the serpent's light trapped in stone. The crystals' ability to refract light into spectral colors is the proof of their origin. Healers carry them and project through them the power of the being that made them.
A healer's initiation involves visionary encounter with Ungud, a meeting in which the serpent confers crystals, knowledge, and the authority to use both. The waterholes where Ungud dwells remain sacred sites requiring proper ceremonial approach.
