Description
In the Dreamtime, the world lay in total darkness until the Great Spirit whispered to the sleeping sun goddess Yhi. She opened her eyes and light poured across the earth for the first time. Then she walked the dark landscape, and everywhere her rays fell, dormant spirits sprang to life.
Mythology & Lore
The First Dawn
The world had no light. Beneath the earth, the spirits of every living thing lay sealed in rock and ice, waiting. Baiame spoke Yhi's name across the void, and the sun goddess opened her eyes. Light flooded outward in every direction.
Yhi descended and walked the earth. Where her feet touched bare ground, plants forced through the soil. She entered the caves and insects spiraled up toward her warmth. She crossed the frozen places and her heat cracked the ice, freeing fish into the meltwater. She walked the open plains and birds burst into a sky that had never known flight. She reached the deep underground chambers and kangaroos bounded out onto the grass.
When every spirit had been woken, Yhi gathered the animals and offered them a choice: keep the forms her light had given them, or wish for new ones. The platypus, unable to decide, asked for everything at once. Yhi granted it. Then she returned to the sky and promised to rise each morning, so that the first dawn would never truly end.
