Mythology & Lore
The Rain Bringer
Lietuvonis takes his name from lietus, Lithuanian for rain. His domain was narrow but absolute: whether rain fell at the right time decided whether a village ate or starved.
When drought threatened, whole villages walked together through fields that had turned brown, calling on him. Processions moved through the parched landscape. Offerings were made. Some rites involved pouring water on the dry ground to show the god what was needed.
When the rains arrived and the harvest proved good, thanksgiving followed. Offerings at harvest time were not formality but relief. Every full storehouse was proof that the rain god had listened.
