Description

Mythology & Lore
The Weight on the Chest
Slogutis crept to the bedside during the vulnerable hours of sleep and pressed down upon the sleeper's body. The victim woke, or seemed to wake, unable to move, unable to cry out, pinned beneath a suffocating weight while terror flooded every thought. The pressure on the chest, the certainty that something was sitting there in the darkness with patient, crushing intent. Those who suffered his visits knew the feeling too well to mistake it for ordinary dreaming. This was something with weight and will.
He came in the deepest part of the night and stayed until morning light drove him off. There was nothing to do but endure. The victim could not move a hand to push him away, could not open a mouth to call for help. Repeated visits left people exhausted and afraid to sleep, watching the dark corners of their own bedrooms as night approached.
Warding
Iron beneath the pillow repelled him, as it repelled many Baltic spirits. Prayers recited before sleep could bar the door. When the attacks persisted despite these measures, families sought out those who understood spiritual matters for stronger blessings. Slogutis, in Lithuanian folk belief, did not visit without reason, and finding what had drawn his attention was often the only way to end his nightly visits.
