Description
A red ember drifting among the cold white stars, Mars burned with a distinctive glow that the Baltic sky-watchers named Žiezula — from žiezdrà, spark. She was the warmest-looking light in the night sky, a wandering coal whose slow, two-year circuit through the heavens marked time for those who watched from below.
Mythology & Lore
The Ember Star
Lasickis names Žiezula among the Samogitian deities as the goddess of Mars. Her name comes from žiezdrà, the Lithuanian word for spark or glowing coal. Where other wandering stars shone white or pale yellow, Mars glowed red, a living ember drifting through the constellations.
She moved slowly, taking nearly two years to complete her circuit through the stars. When Mars reached opposition, rising as the sun set and burning at its brightest, the ember star held the night sky like a coal refusing to go dark.
