The Northern Gate

In the mandala of the Five Wisdom Buddhas, each direction holds a different buddha. Vairochana sits at the center, the others at east, south, and west. At the northern gate sits Amoghasiddhi, green as growing vegetation, the wind element made visible. His name means "Unfailing Accomplishment." His right hand is raised in the abhaya mudra, palm outward at chest height. The gesture says one thing: fear not.

His throne is supported by garudas, the great bird-beings that prey on serpents. His primary symbol is the vishvavajra, four thunderbolts pointing to the four directions. The Guhyasamaja Tantra, one of the earliest tantric texts, places him at the northern gate of its mandala, and subsequent tantric systems preserved his position there. He presides over the transformation of jealousy into its enlightened counterpart: the wisdom that sees exactly what needs doing and does it without hesitation.

The Karma Family

Amoghasiddhi heads the Karma Family, the Action Family, which gathers all practices concerned with accomplishment. Green Tara belongs to this family. Her tireless responsiveness to those who call on her carries the same energy Amoghasiddhi embodies: swift, unobstructed, aimed not at the practitioner's benefit alone but at whatever the situation demands.

His buddha-land lies to the north, called Prakuta or Karmaprasiddhi, "Accomplishment of Action." Beings born there progress toward awakening without obstruction. The northern direction in traditional Buddhist cosmology is where deeds reach their completion. Amoghasiddhi rules there because his vow was this: that no sincere act of practice would go unanswered.
