Ananda was born to the Shakya prince Amritodana, brother of King Suddhodana, making Ananda and Siddhartha Gautama cousins within the royal Shakya clan of Kapilavastu.
⚠ Some Pali commentaries identify Ananda's father as Suklodana rather than Amitodana; the Mahavastu favors Amitodana.
In the Mulasarvastivada tradition, Devadatta is the son of Amritodana, brother of King Suddhodana, making him a prince of the Shakya clan and the Buddha's own cousin.
⚠ Pali sources (Dhammapada Atthakatha) identify Devadatta as son of Suppabuddha of the Koliyan clan, not Amritodana of the Shakyas.
