  In Indian Vajrayana, Chakrasamvara and Vajrayogini form the central yab-yum pair of the Chakrasamvara Tantra. The mahasiddhas Luipa, Ghantapa, and Naropa each received distinct lineage transmissions of this practice, which spread from Nalanda and Vikramashila across the Buddhist world.

  Chakrasamvara is an emanation of Vajradhara — the heruka form through which the primordial buddha transmits the mother tantra teachings. The Chakrasamvara Tantra traces its authority directly to Vajradhara's revelation to the mahasiddhas.

  Chakrasamvara was transmitted directly from Indian Vajrayana into Tibetan Buddhism, where his practice became central to the Kagyu and Sakya lineages as the supreme heruka deity of the mother tantra class.
