Description

Their garlands never wilt, their garments never soil, their bodies glow with fragrance. Then the merit runs out. The flowers brown. The robes stink. The throne grows hard. The attendants leave.

Mythology & Lore

The Heavens

Devaputras dwell in palaces made of seven precious substances. Their garments never soil or wear out. Celestial musicians attend them, their bodies radiate sweet fragrance and light, and every wish is fulfilled the instant it arises. Their lifespans stretch across millions of human years. The Tusita Heaven is home to Maitreya, the future Buddha, and the realm where Siddhartha himself resided before his final birth on earth.

The Five Signs of Decay

When a Devaputra's store of positive karma begins to run out, five signs appear. Their flower garlands wither. Their divine garments become soiled and begin to smell. Sweat beads on bodies that had never known it. They grow restless on thrones that once held them in perfect ease. Their attendants, one by one, stop coming.

A being who has known nothing but celestial bliss for millions of years now faces rebirth as an animal or a creature in the hells. The suffering is not physical. It is the knowledge of what is coming.
