Avalokiteshvara dwells upon Mount Potalaka, his sacred island-mountain in the southern sea, where he receives and teaches all beings who seek him.
Potala in Tibetan tradition is the direct transmission of Potalaka from Indian Buddhist sources, both describing the celestial mountain abode of Avalokiteśvara from which the bodhisattva of compassion watches over all suffering beings.
