The Five Wisdom Kings are wrathful emanations of the Five Dhyani Buddhas, stationed at the cardinal points of the mandala — Acala immovable at the center, Trailokyavijaya conquering the three worlds in the east, Kundali coiled with serpents and nectar in the south, Yamantaka vanquishing death in the west, and Vajrayaksha devouring evil in the north.
The buffalo-headed Destroyer of Death was transmitted directly from Indian Vajrayana into Tibetan Buddhism, where Yamantaka became the principal yidam deity of the Gelug school and a central figure in the highest yoga tantra practices.
