Description
When Baal's rains fell and the thunder passed, what remained was Arsay's gift — the dark soil drinking deep, ready to bring forth grain. She was the earth-daughter, youngest of three sisters born to the storm god, and her name said everything: Girl of the Earth.
Mythology & Lore
The Three Daughters of the Storm
Baal's household held three daughters, each named for what his storms left behind. Pidray was "Girl of Light" and Tallay was "Girl of Dew," one for the clearing sky and one for the moisture that settled between rains. Arsay was the earth itself, the dark soil that received her father's water and brought forth grain. Her Ugaritic title, bt arṣ, means "Girl of the Earth."
In the Baal Cycle, the three appear at their father's side during the central events of the narrative. Baal dispatched them as messengers to other gods, and they carried his word with the authority of his own household.
When the Rains Ceased
When Baal descended into the domain of Mot, the rains stopped. The earth dried and cracked. The fertile ground that was Arsay's very identity became barren, as though the storm god's death had struck his earth-daughter too.
Only when Anat retrieved Baal from the underworld and the rains returned did the soil drink deep again.
