Mythology & Lore
The Forging and Naming
Yam had seized the throne of the divine assembly, and the gods cowered before the sea's tyranny. When Yam's messengers arrived at the divine council demanding Baal's surrender, most of the gods dropped their heads to their knees in submission. Baal alone refused to kneel. He rebuked the assembly for their cowardice and swore he would drag the sea from his stolen seat. But defiance alone would not defeat Yam. He needed weapons equal to the task.
Kothar-wa-Khasis, the divine craftsman, went to his forge and shaped two clubs. The first he named with an incantation, speaking its purpose into existence: "Your name is Yagrush. Yagrush, chase Yam, chase Yam from his throne, Nahar from the seat of his dominion." The words made Yagrush more than a mace. They made it an agent with intent, a weapon that would seek its target as surely as a hawk seeks prey.
The Strike Against Yam
Baal took Yagrush and faced the sea god. The enchanted club leapt from his hands and struck Yam between the shoulders with tremendous force. But Yam did not fall. The sea god absorbed the blow and stood firm, and for a terrible moment it seemed that even a weapon forged and named by the greatest craftsman among the gods could not break the sea's grip on the world.
Kothar-wa-Khasis steadied Baal and produced the second club, Aymur, the Driver, speaking its own name and mission into being. This time the weapon struck Yam between the eyes and crashed down upon his skull. The sea god's legs buckled. He collapsed, and Baal scattered him across the earth. With Yam broken and his waters driven back to their proper boundaries, Baal claimed the kingship of the gods.
