Description

At the Second Battle of Mag Tuired, Cethlenn cast the spear that wounded the Dagda, and though the chief god of the Tuatha Dé Danann survived the battle, the wound festered and eventually killed him. The town of Enniskillen still bears her name: Inis Ceithleann, Cethlenn's Island.

Mythology & Lore

Wife of Balor

Cethlenn was a Fomorian warrior and the wife of Balor of the Evil Eye. She fought alongside Balor and the Fomorian forces at the Second Battle of Mag Tuired.

The Wounding of the Dagda

Cethlenn struck the Dagda with a spear cast that inflicted a grievous injury. Though the Dagda survived the battle and continued to rule among his people, the wound festered and he eventually died from it, according to the Lebor Gabála tradition.

Inis Ceithleann

Cethlenn's name survives in the Irish landscape. Enniskillen in County Fermanagh derives from Inis Ceithleann, meaning Cethlenn's Island, referring to an island in the River Erne around which the town grew.
