Description

No weapon from Gofannon's smithy ever failed its wielder, and his sacred ale protected those who drank it from disease. Son of Dôn and brother to Gwydion, the divine smith of the Welsh gods survives in fragments of poetry and the Triads, a craftsman whose fuller myths have been lost.

Mythology & Lore

The Smith of the Gods

Gofannon fab Dôn was the divine smith of the gods, son of Dôn and brother to Gwydion the magician. No weapon from his forge ever missed its mark or failed its wielder. He brewed a sacred ale that conferred protection from disease upon those who drank it.

In the Fourth Branch

Gofannon appears in the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi as one of the sons of Dôn, though the surviving narrative centers on his siblings Gwydion and Arianrhod. References to his smithwork and his brew survive in scattered poetry and the Welsh Triads. His fuller myths have not come down to us.
