Description
Ogma led willing followers by golden chains running from his tongue to their ears — the irresistible power of eloquent speech made visible. He invented the Ogham script, Ireland's first writing, and fought as champion of the Tuatha Dé Danann, taking a sword that spoke its own battle-deeds.
Mythology & Lore
Inventor of Ogham
Ogma was champion and orator of the Tuatha Dé Danann, a brother of the Dagda. He is credited in the Book of Ballymote with the invention of the Ogham script, Ireland's first writing, consisting of lines and notches carved along the edges of standing stones. The script was named for him.
The Fomorian Oppression
During the tyrannical reign of Bres over the Tuatha Dé Danann, Ogma was reduced to carrying firewood for the court. This oppression lasted until Lugh arrived and organised the rebellion that would lead to the Second Battle of Mag Tuired.
The Second Battle of Mag Tuired
At the Second Battle, Ogma fought as the champion of the Tuatha Dé Danann. He engaged the Fomorian king Indech in combat and slew him, taking his sword as a trophy. When Ogma unsheathed it, the captured sword spoke, recounting the battles it had fought. Ogma also accompanied the Dagda and Lugh in pursuing the Fomorians after the battle to recover the Dagda's stolen harp, Uaithne.
