Rhiannon chose Pwyll, Prince of Dyfed, as her husband over the suitor her father had chosen, and bore him a son, Pryderi, who vanished on the night of his birth — leaving Rhiannon falsely accused of devouring her own child.
Arawn and Pwyll exchanged forms for a year so that Pwyll could slay Arawn's rival Hafgan with a single blow. Pwyll shared Arawn's queen's bed each night but never touched her, and when the year ended Arawn named him Pwyll Pen Annwn — Head of Annwn — in lasting friendship.
Pwyll exchanged places with Arawn, king of the Otherworld, and ruled Annwn for a year, defeating Hafgan in single combat.
