Tailtiu was wife of Eochaid mac Eirc, the last High King of the Fir Bolg, who fell at the First Battle of Mag Tuired when the Tuatha Dé Danann conquered Ireland.
Tailtiu, the last queen of the Fir Bolg, fostered the young Lugh after Manannan mac Lir entrusted him to her care. She raised him on the Plain of Teltown until he came of age to join the Tuatha Dé Danann.
The Fir Bolg were the third wave of settlers to reach Ireland, ruled by their last king Eochaid mac Eirc until the Tuatha Dé Danann defeated them at the First Battle of Mag Tuired. Tailtiu, a Fir Bolg queen, later fostered Lugh and cleared the plains that bear her name.
Lughnasadh commemorates Tailtiu, Lugh's foster-mother, who died of exhaustion after clearing the forests and plains of Ireland for cultivation. The funeral games at her grave at Teltown honored her sacrifice each harvest season.
