Mythology & Lore
The Island of the Dead
Tech Duinn, the House of Donn, is an island off the southwest coast of Ireland where the souls of the dead gather before their journey to the Otherworld. It is identified in tradition with Bull Rock, a small rocky island off the Beara Peninsula in County Cork, visible from the mainland on clear days but swallowed by fog and spray in rough weather. The island took its name from Donn, eldest son of Míl Espáine, who drowned near this spot after offending the goddess Ériu during the Milesian invasion of Ireland. His body was buried on the rock, and there he became lord of the dead.
The Gathering of Souls
The dead were believed to travel to Tech Duinn after death, journeying westward toward the sea. Donn's invitation, preserved in medieval Irish texts: "To me, to my house, you shall come after your death." The dead came not for judgement but to join those who had gone before them.
Folk Belief and the Sea
Fishermen along the southwest coast treated the island with caution. Ghostly lights and sounds were reported at Bull Rock, particularly at night and during storms, and to pass the island in rough weather was to risk seeing the dead assembled on its surface. The saying "Donn is up" described wild gales. At Samhain, when the barrier between the living and the dead grew thin, the island drew closer than at any other time of year.
