Description
Born of a forbidden union between the Jade Emperor's sister and a mortal, Erlang Shen split a mountain to free his imprisoned mother. His seventy-three transformations and truth-seeing third eye made him the only god who could match Sun Wukong blow for blow.
Mythology & Lore
The Forbidden Union
Erlang Shen's mother Yaoji (瑶姬) was the Jade Emperor's younger sister, a celestial goddess who descended to earth and fell in love with a mortal scholar named Yang Tianyou (楊天佑). The union violated celestial law. When the Jade Emperor discovered it, he imprisoned Yaoji beneath Mount Tao (桃山). The child born of this union, Yang Jian (楊戔), would grow up to become the warrior who freed his mother.
Liberation of His Mother
The young Yang Jian trained under the Daoist immortal Yùdǐng Zhēnrén (玉鼎真人) on Mount Kunlun, mastering the seventy-three transformations and the arts of war. Armed with a three-pointed, double-edged lance (三尖兩刃刀) and accompanied by his celestial hound Xiaotian Quan (嚨天犬), he descended to challenge the forces guarding Mount Tao.
He split the mountain with his axe and freed his mother. But she had been imprisoned so long beneath its weight that exposure to the open sky killed her.
The Battle with the Monkey King
Erlang Shen's defining appearance comes in Journey to the West. When Sun Wukong rebelled against the celestial bureaucracy and declared himself "Great Sage Equal to Heaven," the Jade Emperor's armies failed to subdue him. Guanyin recommended summoning the emperor's estranged nephew.
Erlang Shen marched from Guankou with his celestial hound and his seven sworn brothers, the Plum Mountain Brothers (梅山兄弟). He and Sun Wukong fought to a standstill in their true forms, equally matched in strength and skill. Then the transformations began. Sun Wukong became a sparrow; Erlang Shen became a hawk. Sun Wukong became a fish in a stream; Erlang Shen became a cormorant diving after him. Each form was countered, predator pursuing prey across heaven and earth. Erlang Shen's third eye (天眼) saw through every disguise.
The battle ended through outside intervention. Laozi dropped his diamond snare (金剛琢) from the Southern Gate of Heaven, stunning Sun Wukong. Xiaotian Quan bit the Monkey King's leg and brought him down. Erlang Shen and his brothers bound him.
In Journey to the West, Erlang Shen is described as a deity who "listens to imperial announcements but does not attend celestial audiences" (聽調不聽宣). He fights for heaven when called but will not bow at court. His defiance is rooted in his history: the uncle who calls on him in crisis is the same uncle who imprisoned his mother.
Investiture of the Gods
In the Fengshen Yanyi (封神演義), Yang Jian descends from the mountains to fight alongside King Wu and the strategist Jiang Ziya in the campaign to overthrow King Zhou of Shang. His most notable battle is against Yuan Hong (袁洪), a white ape demon whose transformation powers match his own. Their prolonged duel, two master shapeshifters fighting across multiple forms, ended only when the goddess Nüwa lent her magical silk rope to capture Yuan Hong.
The Warrior of Guankou
Erlang Shen's cult has deep roots in Sichuan Province, where it intertwines with the legacy of Li Bing (李冰), the Qin dynasty governor who built the Dujiangyan irrigation system around 256 BCE. The system tamed the Min River's floods and turned the Chengdu Plain into rich farmland. Some traditions identify Erlang Shen as Li Bing's son, who helped his father battle a river dragon during construction. The Erlang Temple (二王廟) at Dujiangyan honors both figures.
