Mazu was born Lin Moniang, daughter of the fisherman Lin Yuan of Meizhou Island in Fujian, a silent infant who never cried from birth.
Mazu subdued the demons Qianli Yan and Shunfeng Er who had terrorized the Fujian coast, binding them to her service as guardian attendants who scan the seas and listen for the prayers of sailors in peril.
Mazu was elevated to the rank of Celestial Consort and later Empress of Heaven within the Jade Emperor's celestial hierarchy, recognized for her protection of seafarers.
When a typhoon struck her father Lin Yuan's fishing boats, the young Lin Moniang fell into a trance and projected her spirit across the ocean, seizing the vessels and dragging them to safety through the storm.
