The Menshen encompass successive generations of door guardians: the ancient pair Shen Tu and Yu Lei, who caught ghosts at the peach tree gate on Dushuo Mountain, and the Tang dynasty generals Qin Shubao and Yuchi Gong, whose vigil outside Emperor Taizong's bedchamber made them the most famous door gods in China.
