Laozi rode his water buffalo westward through Hangu Pass, where Yin Xi the gate-keeper recognized him as a departing sage and begged him to leave behind his wisdom. Laozi wrote five thousand characters of the Dao De Jing, handed the scroll to Yin Xi, and vanished into the wilderness beyond the pass.
