Eight mortals who each found the Dao by different paths — a crippled beggar, a flamboyant swordsman, an ancient with a paper donkey, a court noble, a flower maiden, a genderless singer, a flute-playing youth, and a fan-waving general — together forming the most beloved band of immortals in Chinese tradition.
Zhongli Quan and Lü Dongbin encountered Cao Guojiu by the Yellow River, where he had wandered in rough clothing after renouncing the Song court in shame over his brother's murders. When Zhongli Quan asked where the Dao was, Cao Guojiu pointed at the sky; asked where the sky was, he pointed at his heart, and the two immortals accepted him as their disciple.
Zhongli Quan tested Lü Dongbin with the Yellow Millet Dream and became his Daoist master, transmitting the secrets of immortality and the sword arts.
