The Nursing

Hercle had already killed the lion and worn its skin. He had already walked the earth as a mortal hero. But he was not yet a god.

Uni changed that. On a bronze mirror from Volterra, now in the Museo Guarnacci, the scene is rendered plainly: Hercle, bearded and full-grown, nurses at Uni's breast while Tinia and the other gods look on. The inscription names them. This is not an infant feeding. Uni's milk is the substance of immortality, and she offers it deliberately, pulling the hero to her like a mother claiming a son. The act transforms him. What enters her arms as a mortal hero leaves as a god.

Menrva and Turan stand as witnesses. Their presence appears on multiple mirrors and engraved gems from the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE, always attending the same moment: the queen of heaven adopting a hero before the assembled divine court. No god objects. No voice dissents. Hercle belongs among them now, and every deity present confirms it.

Among the Gods

At the sanctuary of Portonaccio at Veii, terracotta figures from the late 6th century BCE stood along the temple roof. One showed Hercle seizing the Ceryneian hind, the golden-horned deer sacred to Artumes. Beside him stood Aplu. Two gods, not one god and a mortal, hunting together in fired clay above a place of worship.

On mirrors from Praeneste and other Etruscan workshops, Hercle sits at divine banquets, reclining among the immortals as though he had always been there. He wrestles the Nemean lion on gem engravings and scarabs that Etruscans wore against their skin, his image pressed into stone to ward off harm. The hero who earned his place in heaven did steady work on earth, cut into bronze and gemstone alike. Wherever Etruscans wanted protection, they put Hercle's face.
