Mythology & Lore
Between the Worlds
On the Piacenza Liver, Turms holds a region of the divine sky. On Etruscan bronze mirrors, he appears with caduceus and winged hat, striding into scenes where gods need a messenger. He is there at the Judgment of Elcsntre, standing between the goddesses and the mortal who must choose. He is there in divine assemblies, positioned between groups of deities, the one figure free to cross from one side of the composition to the other.
In the painted tombs of Tarquinia, his role shifts. He walks beside the dead. Vanth lights the way with her torch. Charun waits at the threshold with his hammer. Turms guides the soul between them. The tomb painters gave him the same winged hat and staff he carries on the mirrors, but here the errand is different. He is not carrying messages. He is carrying someone home.
