Voltumna presided over the Etruscan League as its patron deity, his great sanctuary at the Fanum Voltumnae near Volsinii serving as the annual gathering place where delegates from the twelve city-states elected leaders and deliberated war.
Voltumna passed directly into Roman religion as Vertumnus, the god of seasonal change — Propertius declares him an Etruscan deity transplanted to Rome, and his cult on the Aventine preserved the old Etruscan connection.
