Mythology & Lore

The Forest's Dark Mother

Ajatar nursed venomous serpents at her breast as other spirits might nurse children. From her flowed the poison that made snake bites deadly, and she was the origin of all the crawling, venomous things that lurked in the forest's darkest places. To encounter a snake was to encounter Ajatar's child, a creature carrying her malice in its venom.

She was seldom described in precise form: more presence than person, a darkness between the trees. She pursued and harried her victims through the forest until they were lost or mad. Those who crossed into her domain could be struck by sudden fevers or a wasting sickness that followed them home. Animals sickened and died without explanation. A hunter might return from the forest seemingly whole yet fall ill within days, his body wasting as though something among the trees had marked him.

The Healer's Counter

Travelers carried charms or recited protective verses when entering the forest. Offerings left at the forest's edge, bread or a coin, might appease Ajatar enough to grant safe passage.

When illness struck those who had recently been in the forest, she was among the first suspects. The tietäjä fought her with loitsut, incantations that commanded her by name. The healer's task was to identify Ajatar as the cause, speak the words that named her origins, and compel her influence to withdraw. Once she was named aloud, the sickness loosened its grip. Christfrid Ganander recorded her in his Mythologia Fennica of 1789, and the healing incantations preserved in the Suomen Kansan Vanhat Runot contain spells directed against forest spirits matching her description: commands to return to the deep woods and leave the sick in peace.
