Mythology & Lore

The Demon's Steed

Hiiden Hirvi was no ordinary animal. Hiisi crafted it from straw and sticks and animated it with dark magic: a demonic elk that appeared magnificent, larger and more beautiful than any natural creature, but existed solely to lure hunters to their destruction. Those who glimpsed it and gave chase found themselves led deeper into trackless forest, pursuing a creature that always stayed just ahead, never tiring, never quite catchable.

The Chase

Louhi sent Lemminkainen to capture Hiiden Hirvi as the first of three impossible tasks demanded as a bride-price for her daughter. The tasks were designed to kill him.

Lemminkainen crafted special skis and prayed to Ukko for assistance, then set off across the snowy wilderness. For days he chased the elk across frozen landscape. The elk did not tire, did not need rest. It was made of magic and malice, and it could run forever. The chase carried Lemminkainen to the frozen wastes of the far north, where few humans ventured and the cold grew more bitter with every stride.

His skis shattered beneath him. Lemminkainen turned from speed to prayer, calling upon Tapio the forest king to open his storehouses, promising gold and silver to Mielikki. The prayers succeeded where speed had failed: the elk was captured through divine favor, and Lemminkainen returned with his impossible prize.
