Mythology & Lore
The Serpent Realm
Kyypola lay beneath the earth, the homeland of vipers and the source of their venom. Serpents moved between Kyypola and the surface world, slipping through crevices and holes in the ground, carrying poison up from the depths.
The realm was dark and underground, coiled with serpentine power. Ajatar, the forest spirit who nursed venomous snakes at her breast and spread disease through the woods, was tied to it.
The Healer's Command
When a snakebite struck, healers traced the venom back to its source. The tietäjä would name Kyypola aloud, describe the realm, identify where the snake came from and where its poison was brewed. Then came the command: return to Kyypola. Sink through the earth. Leave the patient's body and descend to the dark place beneath the ground where you belong.
The incantations addressed the venom directly, as though it were a creature that had strayed from home.
