Mythology & Lore

The Beast at the Gate

Surma crouched at the border between the living world and Tuonela, the land of the dead. An enormous dog with a serpent for a tail, its gaze alone could paralyze or petrify the living. It served Tuoni and Tuonetar, the king and queen of the dead. No one who entered Tuonela would leave again.

The dead who crossed the dark river were held there forever. Any living person reckless enough to approach the gates faced Surma first, and beyond Surma, the iron nets that Tuoni's son stretched across the river to catch escaping souls. Väinämöinen slipped past by transforming into a serpent small enough to thread the mesh. Lemminkäinen never got the chance. He was killed at the river's edge before he even crossed the water, struck down by a blind herdsman nursing an old grudge.
