Untamo- Finnish FigureMortal
Description
Untamo laid his fishing nets in his brother Kalervo's waters, and from that petty theft a feud grew that consumed two families. He slaughtered Kalervo's people and burned their homestead to ashes, but overlooked a pregnant slave woman who bore a son named Kullervo, the child Untamo could not kill.
Mythology & Lore
The Aggressor
The quarrel between Untamo and his brother Kalervo began when Untamo laid his fishing nets in Kalervo's waters and Kalervo took the fish. Kalervo sowed oats behind Untamo's dwelling; Untamo's sheep ate the crop; Kalervo's dog killed the sheep. Each exchange sharpened the hatred, but Untamo was the one who carried it from quarrel to massacre. He gathered armed men and fell on Kalervo's homestead, slaughtering every person he could find and burning the buildings to the ground.
One pregnant woman survived. Untamo took her back to his household as a slave.
The Child He Could Not Kill
The slave woman bore a son named Kullervo. At three months the infant was already vowing to avenge his father's people, and Untamo recognized the danger: "In him grows a new Kalervo." He tried to drown the child, then to burn him, and each time Kullervo survived through some power beyond Untamo's understanding.
Untamo tried putting the boy to work instead. He sent Kullervo to clear forest; the boy destroyed good timber along with the brush. He set him to build fences; Kullervo built walls so high no living thing could cross them. Every task ended in ruin. The child Untamo had spared was wrecking his household from within. When Kullervo finally learned the full truth of his origins, he returned to destroy Untamo's people as completely as Untamo had destroyed his father's.
The Dream-Spirit
Finnish folk tradition preserved a separate Untamo, not a fratricidal mortal but a spirit who presided over the realm of sleep. The Suomen Kansan Vanhat Runot preserves sleep charms that invoke him as a benign lord of rest, called upon when sleep would not come. Both figures share the root uni, meaning sleep.
