Mythology & Lore

Goddess of Wounds

Vammatar governed the pain of physical injuries, the suffering that came from torn flesh and broken bone. She dwelt in the dark reaches connected to Tuonela, and the pain she sent was a tendril of the underworld reaching into the living body. Where Kivutar ruled over pain broadly and Loviatar mothered the nine diseases, Vammatar's domain was the wound itself: the specific agony of the axe-cut and the forge-burn.

The Healer's Command

To drive out Vammatar's pain, the tietäjä recited her origin, naming her, describing where she came from, and commanding her to leave. The words had to be precise: first the origin, then the command to withdraw. To name the wrong spirit or speak the origin incorrectly left the spell powerless and the patient still suffering.

The healer spoke directly to the pain in the wound, ordering it back to the dark place it had come from: back through the torn flesh, back into the earth, back to Tuonela where it belonged.
