Mythology & Lore
The Guardian of the Harlungen
In the medieval Dietrich cycle, Eckart is a nobleman entrusted with the care of the Harlungen, young princes whose inheritance the tyrant Ermenrich covets. When Ermenrich moves to destroy them, Eckart does everything in his power to protect his charges: warning them of treachery, negotiating on their behalf, standing between them and ruin. The Harlungen die anyway. Eckart's loyalty never wavered, but no amount of loyalty could overcome what was arrayed against him. His name became proverbial: treu wie Eckart, faithful as Eckart.
The Warner at the Crossroads
In folk tradition, Eckart's loyalty outlasted his mortal life and found a larger object. He became the forerunner of the Wild Hunt, the spectral cavalcade led by Wodan or Holda that rides through the night sky during the Twelve Days of Christmas. To encounter the Hunt is to risk being swept into its procession, driven mad, or killed.
Faithful Eckart runs ahead of the riders, appearing at crossroads and village edges, calling for mortals to go indoors and close their shutters before the host arrives. Those who heed his warning survive. Those who do not face the Hunt unprotected.
A related tradition places Eckart at the entrance to the Venusberg, the enchanted mountain where Holda holds court over pleasure and temptation. In the Tannhäuser legend, Eckart warns those who approach the mountain of the spiritual danger within. In some tellings, he himself was once trapped there and now keeps vigil to prevent others from repeating his mistake.
Goethe captured the pattern in a ballad: children encounter a fairy host and receive gifts of precious vessels, but Eckart appears to warn them the gifts will bring misfortune. Someone approaches danger unknowing, and a faithful guardian steps forward. In death as in life.
