Description

A Saxon hilltop fortress near modern Obermarsberg that housed the Irminsul, the most sacred cult site of the Continental Saxons. Charlemagne captured Eresburg in 772 CE and destroyed the Irminsul shrine, carrying away its gold and silver offerings.
