Grendel is the son of Grendel's Mother, a fearsome she-creature who dwells with him in an underwater hall beneath a haunted mere, the two bound together as kin of Cain's exiled line.
Beowulf pursued Grendel's Mother to her underwater hall beneath the haunted mere. After Hrunting failed against her hide, he seized a giant-forged sword from the wall and beheaded her, then decapitated Grendel's corpse before surfacing with the golden hilt.
Grendel's Mother killed Æschere, Hrothgar's most trusted counselor, during her revenge raid on Heorot after Beowulf slew her son. She carried Æschere's body back to her mere, and his severed head was later found on the cliff above the water.
