Hagen- Germanic HeroHero
Also known as: Hagene and Hagen von Tronje
Description
He learned Siegfried's one weakness from Kriemhild herself, drove a spear through the hero's back as he drank from a stream, and sank the Nibelung treasure in the Rhine. When Kriemhild finally brought him Gunther's severed head to break his will, Hagen smiled: now only he and God knew the secret, and he would never tell.
Mythology & Lore
The Grim Vassal
Hagen of Troneck is dark where Siegfried is radiant, calculating where Siegfried is impetuous. He murders the hero, sinks the treasure, and carries the secret of both to his grave. He does all of it for his king.
The Murder of Siegfried
When the queens' quarrel exposes how Gunther won Brunhild through Siegfried's deception, Hagen recognizes the crisis immediately. He argues that Siegfried's death will protect the Burgundian kingdom and becomes the instrument of vengeance. He manipulates Kriemhild into revealing Siegfried's one weakness: when Siegfried bathed in dragon's blood to become invulnerable, a linden leaf fell between his shoulder blades, leaving one unprotected spot. Kriemhild, trusting the vassal of her brothers, even marks the spot on Siegfried's garment so Hagen can "guard" it.
During a hunting trip, when Siegfried bends to drink from a stream, Hagen drives a spear through the marked spot. The greatest hero of the age falls by treachery. Hagen then seizes the Nibelung treasure and sinks it in the Rhine, ensuring that only he knows its location.
The Road to Doom
When Kriemhild, now married to Etzel, invites the Burgundians to the Hunnish court, Hagen alone sees the trap. He warns Gunther repeatedly that they ride to their deaths, that Kriemhild has not forgiven. But when Gunther insists on going, Hagen does not abandon him. Loyalty to his king overrides even his own survival.
On the journey, the Danube river-women prophesy that none of the Burgundians will return alive. Hagen tests and confirms the prophecy, then destroys the boat so no one can turn back. If they must die, they will die as warriors, not cowards fleeing fate.
Death and Defiance
At Etzel's court, battle erupts in the feast hall. The vastly outnumbered Burgundians fight with desperate fury until only Hagen and Gunther remain, captured by Dietrich von Bern. Kriemhild demands Hagen reveal where the treasure is hidden. He refuses. She has Gunther beheaded and brings the head to Hagen, thinking this will break him. Instead, Hagen declares that now only he and God know the secret, and he will never tell. Kriemhild seizes Siegfried's sword Balmung and beheads Hagen herself.
The treasure's location dies with him. In the Norse Atlakviða, Högni is Gunnar's brother rather than his vassal. He dies as Atli's captive, laughing as his heart is cut from his living body.
