Mephistopheles is a servant of Lucifer, dispatched to broker and enforce the pact with Faust. He answers to his infernal master and can act only within the bounds the Devil permits.
Mephistopheles appears to Faust first as a black poodle, then as a traveling scholar, offering youth, knowledge, and worldly pleasure in exchange for his immortal soul. For the duration of the pact he serves as Faust's constant companion, fulfilling every desire while the hourglass runs down.
