Trophonius and his brother Agamedes were legendary architects who built Apollo's temple at Delphi and the treasury of King Hyrieus at Boeotian Hyria. Their collaboration ended when they were caught robbing the treasury.
When Agamedes was caught in a trap while robbing the treasury of King Hyrieus, Trophonius cut off his brother's head to prevent identification. This act led to Trophonius's flight and eventual transformation into an oracular spirit.
