Mythology & Lore

Son of Amphiaraus

Amphilochus was the younger son of the seer Amphiaraus and Eriphyle, brother of Alcmaeon. He inherited his father's prophetic gift. When Amphiaraus departed for the doomed expedition of the Seven against Thebes, he charged his sons with avenging his death by killing Eriphyle, who had betrayed him for the Necklace of Harmonia.

The Epigoni

A generation later, Amphilochus joined his brother Alcmaeon and the other sons of the Seven in the campaign of the Epigoni. This second expedition against Thebes succeeded where the first had failed, breaching the city's walls and driving the Thebans to flight. Alcmaeon fulfilled their father's dying wish by killing Eriphyle, the mother who had condemned Amphiaraus to death for a bribe.

After the Wars

Thucydides records that Amphilochus founded the city of Amphilochian Argos in Acarnania. He then traveled east to Cilicia, where he co-founded the oracle at Mallus with the seer Mopsus, son of the prophetess Manto. The two prophets cooperated at first, but a dispute arose over sole control of the sanctuary. Unable to settle their quarrel, they fought in single combat and killed each other. Both were buried at Mallus, and supplicants came to their shared oracle seeking prophetic dreams. Lucian records that the oracle was still active in the second century CE, when Alexander of Abonoteichus regarded it as a genuine rival.
