Mythology & Lore

The Spring at Lerna

Danaus brought his fifty daughters to Argos, but the land was dry. Poseidon, angry with the city, had withheld its waters. Danaus sent his daughters to find springs, and Amymone went searching across the parched countryside. She threw a javelin at a deer and missed, striking a sleeping satyr instead. The creature lunged at her. She cried out to Poseidon, and the god appeared, drove the satyr off with his trident, and lay with her. Where his trident struck the ground, three springs burst from the earth at Lerna. The son she bore him was Nauplius, who founded the port city of Nauplion on the Argolic Gulf.
