Mythology & Lore

Death on Mount Pholoe

Pausanias, passing through Arcadia, records that Bouphagus was a son of Iapetus and Thornax who encountered Artemis on Mount Pholoe. He attempted to seize her by force. Artemis shot him dead.

The town of Bouphagion stood near the border of Megalopolis, on the river Bouphagos, and Pausanias says it took its name from him. Whatever else Bouphagus may have been in life, what survived was the place name and the warning: Artemis did not forgive.
